YA Highway: Road Trip Wednesday #8

"Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic." Today's question on the YA Highway road trip is:

This Week's Topic:
What was the best book you read in January?

No doubt this is totally cliched, but I can't believe January is over! Now that I've got that out of the way, I read a number of good books in January.

Among the top contenders are THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE by Shirley Jackson, and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN by Lionel Shriver. But I'm going to assume there's an implicit "YA" in the question, seeing as it the YA Highway and all.

The best YA book I've read is actually the first two books of a series. Because I finished the first one and dove right into the second, it feels like more of one book than two. THE GODDESS TEST and GODDESS INTERRUPTED (courtesy of NetGalley) by Aimee Carter are amazing! I'm sure many people who were interested have already ready THE GODDESS TEST.

I've seen the cover many times and thought it looked interesting, but something in the book blurb didn't hold my attention. Now that I've read it, I've jumped on the fan band wagon. I loved it! I've only just started reading GODDESS INTERRUPTED, but it's just as strong as the first book so far. I'm excited to finish it and share my review!

Anyone else have a book they didn't think they'd like bowl them over?

  1. Ooh, I will have to read the goddess series! Thanks for the recommendation =).

This month I read A MILLION SUNS by Beth Revis, the second book in an amazing sci-fi series.

  2. I'm curious about We Need to Talk About Kevin--I've seen a lot of previews for the film they've done on it.

THE GODDESS TEST looks interesting. Thanks for the reading suggestion!

    1. I saw the movie too. Stylistically, it's very different from the book, but it's also very good. The book was a little hard to get into, but it was worth sticking it out.

  3. Oh I requested that book. It looked interesting and I have the 1st ready to be downloaded to my Kindle should I be approved. This just made me want to read them even more.

    1. From what I've read so far, if you like the first book, you won't be disappointed in the second. I just wish they had made the novella being released on March 1 available. I can't wait that long!

  4. I haven't yet read these books, but I think they might be going on my already falling over TBR pile :-)

    1. I know what you mean about the TBR pile! I feel like I'm a year behind everyone else in reading the "hot" recent books.

  5. Pride and Prejudice did that to me last year. I wasn't looking forward to my 19th century module when I found out it was on our reading list. But I actually liked it in the end. I'm not a classics girl so to actually get through one and enjoy it was surprising.

The Goddess Test does have an interesting cover but the blurb is what makes me want to read it. I might try that book out in the future. :)

    1. That is one good aspect of required reading--it makes you read works you might not ever pick up on your own. I love Austen.

I can't remember what it was about the blurb that didn't appeal to me, but I'm happy I read it!

  6. Ohhh...so jealous of you right now Tarah :D I really enjoyed The Goddess Test and I am impatiently waiting for the sequel.
I am glad to hear that you find it as strong as the first one! And now...I´m even more impatient for the release of Goddess Interrupted!

    1. I really am curious how Roth is going to deal with the potential civil war angle. I really liked being in the world she set up, and it feels like the second book will have to be drastically different. I guess we'll find out (relatively)soon!

  8. The blurb for THE GODDESS TEST looks really unique and interesting... I'll have to put that on my TBR pile! :) Thanks!
