Feature and Follow Friday #7

Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly social blog hop between book bloggers. There are two hosts: Parajunkee and Alison of Alison Can Read. If you want to join in, click on either of their blogs to get the details. The FF question of the day is:

Q: Define what characteristics your favorite books share. Do they all have a kickass heroine or is the hot love interest the Alpha Male?

My favorite books don't share a single concrete characteristic. I love good writing, cool characters, and a story that seems to be worth devoting X number of hours to it. I love being introduced to new worlds.

Some of my favorite books are Lolita, Middlemarch, The Handmaid's Tale, and Never Let Me Go. I suppose all of these books have a tragic heroine, and all of them are devoted to exploring women's experiences in different ways. If I had to guess, I'd say 70% of the books I read are written by women.

    1. No, I guess not. The whole concept of ranking people as Alphas and Betas weirds me out, though. It makes sense to me as applied to say, a group of chimpanzees, but otherwise it's too Brave New World for me. Also, I think it glorifies a certain version of masculinity that doesn't really do men or women any favors.

  2. Your heroines certainly do sound very strong. Poor heroes. LOL.

    1. Well, some of the heroines in those books are strong, but others aren't. I hope (perhaps too idealistically) that a strong heroine, or woman, isn't diminishing to a hero, or man.

  3. I agree! Life would be so dull if there were no paranormal books/movies/TV shows.

  4. Love the examples... I had to work at it to find something in common, 'cause I like variety! My FF: http://www.burgandyice.blogspot.com/2012/02/rebel-wife-by-taylor-m-polites.html
